In the 70-ties Jastrzębie-Zdrój, which used to be a health resort, was expanded by the construction of modernist high-rise apartment houses for workers at the nearby mines that were coming into being. The actions of the Communist authorities, town planners and builders created absolute space chaos. The city became unfriendly and unattractive for the inhabitants, full of monotonous, block housing and badly organized interchanges. The new project aimed at geometrising the urban layouts and compacting the street network. In two areas new urban layouts were delineated following proven solutions. A centric street plan was proposed incorporating an already existing roundabout with a dark and unused cross-shaped underground passage. In order to create a city centre the Coliseum shopping centre was designed in order to animate that space, promote the localization and become a new source of income for the town.
